Johnny Depp The Bunnyman Genesis, Framed Set of Four
This Unframed Portfolio Comprises Four Limited Edition Artworks
Origins. Origins is the foundational artwork in The Bunnyman Genesis. As Johnny's initial portrayal of the character (a 2m tall canvas), this limited-edition artwork resonates the striking presence of The Bunnyman. The piece is daubed with strokes of dynamic red; a strongly symbolic colour, connoting courage, protection and luck. It highlights The Bunnyman as a bold, powerful guardian warding off evil spirits. Its contrast with black further exposes the figure's duality, who has been described by Johnny as “a fearsome vision and inseparable friend.”
Cosmic. In Cosmic, The Bunnyman embarks on a celestial journey. Seen by Johnny as "powerfully standing with a sword of truth", The Bunnyman stands resolute amongst the galaxies, signifying his role as a universal guardian - and yet he belongs to no single world. Roaming alone across this cosmic void, The Bunnyman inspires viewers to embrace the spirit of adventure.
Flowers. Flowers depicts The Bunnyman against an abstract meadow of poppies. Often associated with sleep and the night, the poppy resonates with The Bunnyman’s connection to the dream world; having first emerged from a recurring childhood dream of Johnny and his son Jack.
Multiverse. The artwork’s textured loom-like background has been meticulously hand-painted by Johnny. It reflects The Bunnyman symbolism as a tapestry of tangible and imagined threads. Encouraging us to look beyond the mundane everyday, he shifts between the layers of the multiverse, and embodies the spirit of unwavering curiosity and courage.
The Symbolism Behind the Collection
In Johnny's The Bunnyman Genesis (2023), an intriguing, silhouetted figure stands before four different, yet parallel, realms of mixed media backgrounds. These limited editions are titled with names corresponding to their respective universe: Origins, Cosmic, Flowers and Multiverse.
Layering each composition with varying textures, contrasting blocks of colour and confident mark-making, Johnny has developed a body of work which demonstrates his expressive creativity.
Having experimented with The Bunnyman's profile for several years, Johnny's collection is the magnum opus of their time together. Infused with a celestial undertones, the symbolic figure stands resolute within each of the artist’s conjured dreamscapes. Each piece reflects the origin story of a character who appeared in Both Johnny and his son Jack's. Not only an inseparable friend and powerful self-representation of the artist himself, The Bunnyman is also an icon of his imagination.
Origin Story
Some years ago, Johnny spied The Bunnyman in a sketch by his son, who’d encountered the figure in a nightmare. The drawing reminded the artist that, decades before, he’d also experienced recurring dreams where the character appeared. But Johnny perceived his presence as comforting rather than haunting.
